  • make long-term dietary changes: A heart-healthy diet does not eliminate fats altogether. Instead, it emphasizes health-promoting fats, particularly unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, in appropriate amounts. Focus on sustainable dietary habits rather than short-term diets.
  • reduce alcohol and tobacco use: Even if it feels challenging, giving up alcohol and tobacco products can be a real game changer for your health. Drinking less alcohol can help you reduce calorie intake and lose excess body fat, while avoiding tobacco lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other diseases. Although it may not be easy, sticking with these changes is worth it. Many people notice positive effects within just a few weeks.
  • become physically active: Regular exercise improves metabolism, helps burn calories, and lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Endurance activities, in particular, appear to have positive effects by increasing HDL cholesterol and lowering LDL cholesterol at the same time. Daily movement is highly beneficial, e.g., cycling, running, or swimming.
