“Lagom” is a Swedish concept that can be roughly translated as “just right,” “in balance,” or “not too much and not too little.” However, there is no direct translation into German. In Swedish culture, “lagom” is widely used and often considered the key to Swedish happiness and well-being. This is because even in the international happiness index, which is made up of various criteria such as life expectancy, personal well-being, social networks and the like, the Swedes are way ahead and are usually always in the top 10.
In essence, “lagom” means limiting yourself to the essentials and living a balanced life without going to extremes. It’s about a healthy amount of everything – neither too much nor too little. For example, eating lagom can mean not over-stuffing yourself, but stopping to eat when you are full. Lagom can also mean having a good work-life balance and taking time for yourself, family and friend:s, or consciously incorporating small breaks, “fika,” into your daily routine.
The concept of “lagom” can also be applied to other areas of life, such as environmental protection and sustainability, where one tries not to consume more than is necessary to conserve the earth’s resources.
Overall, “lagom” is a concept that aims to live a simple and happy life without over striving or doing without. It’s about finding balance in all aspects of life and achieving a sense of contentment and well-being. To help you achieve a little more “lagom” too, here are a few small things you can do to achieve this concept or sense of balance:
- Integrate me-time: Especially outside in nature, we can quiet ourselves, think undisturbed and be completely with ourselves, which can increase overall contentment. Maybe even get over yourself to do things, like going out for coffee, by yourself and be comfortable with yourself.
- Sorting out: Whether it’s your clothes closet or kitchen cupboard, sort out the unnecessary and tidy up. This also creates inner order.
- Refresh: The Swedes like to start the day with a “morning dip”, i.e. an outdoor bath. Alternatively, a cold shower can have an invigorating effect and strengthen the immune system.
- Mindful & enjoyable eating: Take time to eat and listen to your body. When are you really full? Also reach for regional ingredients. This not only adds variety to your plate, but also does something good for the environment. Waste should also be avoided. Instead of throwing food away, freeze your food and only buy as much as you really need.
- Appreciative communication: Try to communicate honestly and sincerely and listen attentively in return. An empathetic cooperation also makes you happy and satisfied.
We wish you much joy in bringing a little more “lagom” into your everyday life!
