Appreciation for greater well-being

As social beings, we have a need for closeness, understanding, and mutual support. Appreciation can also benefit us. It positively impacts our well-being and enhances our interactions.

Definition of appreciation

Appreciation is an attitude toward others. It means that we treat a person with respect and goodwill and regard them as a fully-fledged person. Appreciation can be expressed in the form of gestures and words.

How appreciation increases our well-being

Studies by the BAuA (Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) have demonstrated the impact of appreciation in a professional context. It was found that the well-being of employees who are treated with appreciation by their managers is higher than that of employees who enjoy little appreciation from their superiors. In addition, appreciative relationships protect our mental health and serve as a resource by lowering stress levels and boosting mood-enhancing hormones. When someone shows us appreciation, we feel safe, respected, and valued.

Practicing appreciation.

When we treat others with respect, take their concerns seriously, and give them space to be themselves, we show appreciation. This can look different on a small scale: helping with problems, keeping agreed times, accepting and respecting the other person’s boundaries, thanking them for time spent together, communicating honestly… – reflect on what makes you feel valued and consider how you can show more appreciation to those around you.
