Seasonal Food in December

December is marked by the Advent season and Christmas. On these occasions, a variety of traditional dishes and foods are served. However, December doesn’t have to be all about chocolate, gingerbread, and the like. This winter month also offers diverse seasonal fruits and vegetables. Here’s a selection of seasonal vegetables that you can perfectly incorporate into your meal plan. Not only is it sustainable and healthy, but it might also add a new twist to your Christmas dinner.

Kale

One of the classics during Christmas time is: kale. This seasonal vegetable is rich in vitamin C. A 200g portion can cover our daily requirement. It also contains plenty of vitamin A, which strengthens the eyes and vision. The combination of calcium and phosphorus also promotes the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.

Mushrooms

Also a classic at the Christmas market – the mushroom pan. Mushrooms contain numerous B-group vitamins, such as folic acid. These vitamins are essential for good memory, quality sleep, stable nerves, and balanced mood. Additionally, mushrooms are low in calories and filling due to the contained fiber and proteins.

Chestnuts

The delicious chestnuts are also frequently found at Christmas markets and belong to the nut group. Unlike other types of nuts, they are very low in fat and are rich in vitamin C. The fiber and complex carbohydrates in chestnuts provide sustained satiety and help keep blood sugar levels rising slowly. The high potassium content also strengthens the heart and bones by reducing the excretion of calcium.

Brussels Sprouts

A typical side dish during the winter and Christmas season is Brussels sprouts. Within the cabbage family, they have the highest vitamin C content and are more digestible compared to other cabbage varieties. The fiber content provides lasting satiety and promotes good digestion. Instead of boiling Brussels sprouts traditionally, you can also make them delicious by baking or roasting them in the oven.

Lamb’s Lettuce

The tasty lamb’s lettuce is also in season in December. Since it tends to spoil quickly, it should be consumed as fresh as possible. Nevertheless, it’s worth integrating it into your diet – among all salads, lamb’s lettuce has the highest vitamin C content. Just 100g covers one-third of our daily requirement. Moreover, lamb’s lettuce has a high potassium content, which has a slightly diuretic effect and strengthens our eyes and skin with vitamin A.
